Jesse and Flora Melton and their three children lived through quite an experience during the year 1878. The Melton’s and surrounding families huddled together at the Fort, in what is now south Milton-Freewater, during an Indian uprising. At this time, Ad, a son, contracted diphtheria and everyone returned to their homes, fearing the spread of the much dreaded disease. Ad succumbed a few days later at the age of six. Although the Melton’s and their fellow settlers remained quite uneasy, the Indians calmed down without having raided the Milton-Freewater area.
The Melton’s and their children left Knox County, Illinois in 1865 and spent the winter in Montana. They eventually arrived in Weston in 1866, where they lived out the winter in a dug-out. While there, the Melton’s operated the Stage Depot and then in 1867, they purchased the Knowlton Place on Couse Creek. The home remained in the family until 1962 when it was sold to Herb March.
Their daughter Juliette Reed moved to Ritzville, Washington and settled down, while her sister Viola Winn raised her family on the home on Couse Creek. A son Frank moved to Nevada.

Businesses start up in Weston
In the fall of 1868 he persuaded a man named Abell, who was living at Richards Station, near the present town of Centerville, to come to this place and open a store. Lieuallen donated the ground for his building and gave him a cash bonus. In a few months his goods were taken by the sheriff.
Jesse Melton bought the little shanty Abel had built, and converted it into a hotel; it is now used for a butcher shop. Asberry Lieuallen had built a little house for a dwelling, and in the spring of 1869, T.T. Lieuallen bought it and placed in it a stock of goods. It is now used for a smoke house by S.A. John. A school house was built that year on the ground now occupied by their fine edifice; the old building now forms part of a saloon and billiard hall.

Mrs. M. Reed Local Pioneer
Mrs. Malcom Reed, 86, Ritzville pioneer, died yesterday morning at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Lee Colwell, after a long illness. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Mrs. Julietta Reed, nee Melton, was born in Knox county, Illinois, Dec. 16, 1855, and
came to this area in a wagon train as a small girl. She has been in Montana at the home of a daughter for the past several years but came back to Ritzville about 10 days ago. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lee Colwell of Ritzville, Mrs. W. S. Johnson of Gardiner, Mont., and Mrs. Radford Angell of Valier, Mont.

Another Pioneer Called
Malcom Reed, an old and respected citizen, died at his home on College hill on the early morning of February 25, 1904. (date may be in error as it appeared in the newspaper dated one day before the death) The deceased was born in Virginia seventy-four years ago and has resided in this county twenty-seven years and for the major part of the time has been engaged in the stock business, was always fairly successful and had accumulated considerable property. He leaves a wife and two little girls which comprise the family. He was a man of strong convictions and a positive mind and had little patience with wrong doers or evil persons, which his long experience upon the western frontier tended to make firmer in his declining days. Death was caused by heart trouble and though Mr. Reed had been gradually failing for some time, his demise came rather unexpected. He had seen hard service in the Civil war and his name was upon the pension rolls.
Few pioneers were better known throughout this part of the northwest. He has passed into the ever lasting silence, the mystery and the peace of death. There remains nothing but to say of him
that he did his part faithfully and well, fair and kind to his deserving fellow man, always making himself an element seemingly vital to the welfare of his community more particularly in the earlier days of this country some twenty five years ago when it took sturdy, determined men to withstand the depredations of the outlaw and savage who were then in the ascendency in many portions of the unsettled northwest and with whom the stockman had to seriously contend. With him it is all over, his earthly trials are ended. Good bye, old friend, may you sleep eternity away in the rest that knows no ending. The funeral will occur Friday, Feby. 26, 1904, at 2 p.m. under auspices of Ritzville lodge No. 101, F.& A.M. this city of which the deceased was a member. Services at the First Congregational church, Rev. F. Vernon Jones, the pastor, officiating.

Funeral Service Conducted for Mrs. Colwell
Funeral services for Jessie Flora Colwell, who died at her home in Ritzville Saturday were held Tuesday at the Danekas and Duncan chapel. The Rev. Alfred Carter officiated. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery.
Born in Milton, Ore., Mrs. Colwell lived most of her 62 years in the Ritzville area.
She is survived by her husband, Lee, and one son, Kenneth of Ritzville, and two sisters, Mrs. Elzora Johnson of Gardiner, Mont., and Mrs. Lou Angell of Corman, Mont.
