Notes for RICHARD HUGH GINN:

An illustrated history of Walla Walla County, state of Washington, By Professor W.D. Lyman, W.H. LEVER, Publisher, 1901

RICHARD GINN, deceased, of Walla Walla, was born in Fife, Scotland, January 4, 1820. His father died when he was quite young, and in 1836 he came with his mother to Cornwall, Ontario. He was reared on a farm and received his education in the common schools. He followed the occupation of a farmer in Canada for twenty years, then removed to Fairpoint, Minnesota, purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres and for ten years was engaged in wheat raising there.

Mr. Ginn then came to Umatilla county, Oregon, and located one hundred and sixty acres of land near the town of Weston. To this from time to time he added by purchase of school and railroad land and by taking a timber culture claim until he had six hundred and forty acres. He was the first farmer to raise wheat in the hills near Weston, and threshed his product by using horses to tramp it out on the ground. He afterwards sold part of his land and purchased four hundred and eighty acres in Sherman County, Oregon.

After a residence of twenty-eight years near Weston, Mr. Ginn was compelled, on account of failing health, to abandon the hard life of a farmer and remove to Walla Walla. He purchased a beautiful home at No. 626 Whitman Street, where he resided until the date of his death, April 8, 1899. Two of his sons continue to operate his large farm, which he deeded to them before his death, also one of two hundred acres seven miles south of Walla Walla, in Oregon.

While a resident of Minnesota Mr. Ginn was active in establishing the public-school system of that state, serving as school director and aiding in the building of school houses. While a resident of Oregon he was for a time road appraiser. In Scotland he was a member of the Orangemen, and while living in Minnesota he joined the Grange, becoming a charter member of Fairpoint Lodge some thirty-six years ago.

Mr. Ginn married, on March 19, 1857, Miss Catherine Kinnear, a native of cornwall, Ontario. Her father, who landed in Canada May 23, 1819, was born in Ireland of Scotch extraction, and her mother in England. Mr. and Mrs, Ginn were both members of the Congregational church of Walla Walla. And Mrs. Ginn still continues to take an active interest in the work of that society. In the family are ten children: Robert J., at present a merchant in Moro, Oregon; Eliza J. died December 16, 1872; Ella M., now Mrs. J.R. Morrison, of Fort Langley, B.C.; Annie S., now wife of William Elliiot, of Walla Walla; Caroline A., now Mrs. Thomas Thompson, of Pendleton, Oregon; John A., deceased; Walter T., on his father’s 0ld farm; Maggie J., wife of Alexander Brady; George A., also on the farm; Minnie A., with her mother. Three of the children, Maggie, George and Minnie, are graduates of the Weston Normal School. The entire family are benevolently disposed people, and have assisted liberally in the building of churches wherever they have lived and in the support of all charitable institutions.

As illustrative of the conditions under which many of the early pioneers began life in the valley we may note that when Mr. and Mrs. Ginn arrived in Weston their earthly belongings consisted of a wagon and two horses and nineteen dollars in greenbacks, then worth about ninety per cent. Of their face value. Their nearest trading point was Walla Walla, twenty miles distant, and thither they had to go for the provisions and household articles necessary for their first rude home. But such was the dauntless spirit which characterized these early pioneers that they overcame every obstacle and mastered every opposing force, though the manner of achieving their victories is often a mystery to the rising generation.

MARIE DORION AND THE TRAIL OF THE PIONEERS - Section Two

Page 33 – DONALD, ELLEN K. McDONALD

1874

Determined to reach the virgin wilds of Oregon, the McDonald and Kinnear families left Singhampton, Ontario, Canada in April of 1874 and took an 8-day train trip to Ogden, Utah. On the way, the families were exposed to measles and braved the Indians, which the "Iron Horse" attracted.

The McDonald’s and the Kinnear’s camped for a week in the Ogden area and then bought horses and wagons and made their trek west along the Oregon Trail. They arrived and settled in June in Weston. During the summer, the McDonald family produced 10 children. Their 3rd child, Jessie, married another pioneer Eugene A. Dudley, in November of 1885. To this union, were born 6 children, of which the 2nd child, Donald Dean Dudley, married Jane Gates in June of 1910.

In 1878, Jessie McDonald came home from working in the fields during the harvest season feeling quite ill. She had contracted the dreaded disease of diphtheria. Six of the nine McDonald children were afflicted with the sickness and the three youngest died. Later, another daughter, Eva, was born.

HON. ROBERT J. GINN

Manager of the Moro Implement Company, of Moro, Sherman county, is a Canadian, having been born in Stormont county, Eastern Ontario, December 15, 1857. His father, Richard Ginn, was a native of Scotland, dying at Walla Walla, Washington, in 1899. His mother, Catherine (Kinnere) Ginn is a native of Canada, of Irish descent, and at present resides at Walla Walla. The family removed to Minnesota when our subject was nearly three years of age in the fall of 1860, arriving there on the day Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. There they remained ten years, and in the fall of 1870 came to Oregon, via the railroad to Kelton, Utah. Here the father, who had preceded them in the spring, met them with teams, and they all took their way thence to Umatilla county, Oregon. They located one mile from Weston where they lived until 1897 and then moved to Walla Walla, Washington.

In the public schools of Weston our subject received his education, remaining with his parents until 1880. He then migrated to Sherman county, then Wasco county, and located a preemption claim, May 17, 1880. Alexander D. McDonald, now of Spokane, Washington, came with him and they were the only settlers one mile east of what is now De Moss Springs. At that period no claims had been taken up south of them and but a few north, in the county. He sowed one hundred and eighty acres to wheat in the fall of 1881; harvested it in 1882 and hauled it to Grants, the first load ever taken out of the county. He purchased more land, originally railroad land, but later reverted to the government and school. He had one thousand two hundred and twenty-eight acres in one tract, and tracts of four hundred and eighty and one thousand and forty acres, which he purchased since, nearly all of which is tillable. Of this land Mr. Ginn cultivates one thousand two hundred and twenty-eight acres and rents the rest. In February, 1888, he left the farm and repairing to Biggs, where he conducted a warehouse and sold farm machinery for Staver & Walker, of Portland until May, 1892. Then he came to Moro and engaged in the hardware and agricultural machinery business. Subsequently he was one of the incorporators of the Moro Mercantile Company which was afterward sold to the Sherman Trading Company. In June, 1904, Mr. Ginn and Moore Brothers purchased the hardware and farming implement stock of from $16,000 to $18,000 worth of implements and hardware.

In October, 1882, Mr. Ginn was united in marriage to Jeanette McDonald, sister of Dixon McDonald, subscriber's partner at Biggs, in the warehouse business. She died at Biggs, December 29, 1889. November 22, 1894, at The Dalles, Mr. Ginn was married to Carrie B. Coleman, a native of Iowa. She is the daughter of William and Mary (Woods) Coleman. Her father died when she was about four years of age, from an accident while operating a threshing machine. Her mother, a native of Pennsylvania, lives at Moro. Our subject has five sisters living; Ellen, wife of John R. Morrison, of British Columbia, near Fort Langley; Annie, wife of William Elliott, a Umatilla county farmer; Caroline, wife of Thomas Thompson, a farmer near Pendleton, Oregon; Maggie, wife of Alexander Brady, of Marysville, Washington, a congregational minister; and Minnie, wife of Howard Haley, a railroad man of Walla Walla. Mrs. Ginn has two half-brothers, James and Leslie, farmers in Nebraska; Leslie was treasurer of his county two terms. She also has one half sister, widow of Robert McKeown, of Kansas. She has three full sisters, Agnes, wife of Archie Smiley, of College Springs, Iowa; Maggie, wife of Thomas R. McGinnis, ex-sheriff of Sherman county; and Mary L., widow of R. E. Hoskenson, of Moro. Mr. Ginn has two brothers, Walter and George, farmers near Walla Walla.

Our subject has six children; by his first wife, Arthur, Ellwood and Jennie, and by his second wife, Harold, Faith and Richard. both he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. During the past seven years he has been superintendent of that Sunday school, and in May, 1904, he was delegate from the Columbia River Conference to the Methodist General Conference at Los Angeles, California. Fraternally he is a member of the W. W, of Moro, and Mrs. Ginn is president of the W. C. T. U., of Sherman county. His political affiliations are with the Republican party and in 1902 he was elected member of the state legislature, running far ahead of his ticket. During his term he introduced and secured the passage of the Portage railroad bill, from The Dalles to Celilo. He has served two terms in the city council and is serving his third term as school director.

Notes for EUGENE A. DUDLEY:

EUGENE A. DUDLEY FAMILY

Mrs. J. L. Geyer

1970

Eugene A. Dudley came from Beaverton Oregon where he was born, to Weston Oregon, in 1879. He came to help his sister, Melissa Dudley Rogers, whose husband, Jerard Lot Rogers, had died, leaving her with seven children, the youngest, one year old.

Eugene A. Dudley, born 19 November 1856 and died 13 March 1944, married on the 25 November 1885 to Jessie McDonald, born 4 November 1861 and died 27 Jul 1955. They had six children; Eugene Earl; Donald Dean; Irene Isabel; Glenn Gerald; Max Marion, and Victor Verne. There is 16 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren.

Eugene and his bride homesteaded a ranch, 2-1/2 miles West of Athena, where Dean Dudley’s widow now lives. Five children were born here. The Taylor family, Til Taylor, Sheriff of Umatilla County, and Jinks Taylor lived on the ranch adjoining. About 1900 the Dudley and Taylor families bought adjacent land just East of Athena. The Dudley’s built the 3-story house, which still stands just East of Athena. The story goes that Mr. Dudley planned the new house, and it was completed before Mrs. Dudley ever saw it, as it was too difficult for her to get into town with five small children. The sixth child was born in the new house. They lived in this home until Mr. Dudley’s death in 1944

Biography of ANSON B. WOODS

Since 1911 Anson B. WOODS has resided in Walla Walla, enjoying a leisure made

possible by his well directed labors as a farmer in former years. He was born in Iowa, near Dubuque, September 12, 1864, a son of James and Margaret (DAUGHERTY) WOODS, both of whom were born in Pennsylvania. However, they were taken to Iowa as children by their respective parents and there grew to mature years and were married. In 1883 they removed to Oregon and located upon a farm in Wasco, now Sherman, county, to the operation of which the father devotes his labors and there both he and his wife are still making their home.

Anson B. WOODS, who is on of a family of nine children, all of whom survive, was reared at home and attended the public schools of Iowa in the acquirement of his education. He was eightenn years of age at the time of the removal of the family to Oregon and at once began farming in that part of Wasco county, which has now become Sherman county. In 1896 he removed to Umatilla county and took

up his residencs upon a farm of four hundred and eighty acres which he purchased

and which he still owns. For fifteen years his time and attention were completely taken up with the operation of that place, which is in a high state of cultivation and is well improved. As he was progressive in his methods and at the same time managed his business affairs well his rescources steadily increased and in 1911 he retired and removed to Walla Walla, purchasing a comfortable residence on Boyer Avenue.

Mr WOODS was married in 1895 to Miss Eliza McDONALD, a native of Canada, and a daughter of D.M. and Ellen McDONALD. The father died in July, 1914 and the

mother makes her home still in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. WOODS have a daughter,

Nellie Faith. They belong to the United Brethren church and for a number of years Mr. WOODS has served capably as superintendant of the Sunday school. He supports the candidates and measures of the democratic party at the polls and while living in Oregon wa, for some time a member of the school board. He is a selfmade man, having at all times depended upon his own powers and rescources for advancement, and the success which he has gained is proof of his ability and energy.

Pair Drowned In John Day

PENDLETON -- Mrs Allen (Wilma E) Temple and Dave Temple, both of Pendleton, were drowned about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the North Fork of the John Day River about 75 miles of Pendleton.

Six persons were in a seven-passenger rubber boat running the North Fork when the boat struck an underwater stump and flipped over. All six were thrown into the water and both Mrs Temple and Dave Temple were seen swimming. It is believed they later were stunned when they struck obstructions.

The Other four, Mr and Mrs Jess Best, Dave Temple's daughter Virginia, and Mrs Morris Temple managed to swim to shore despite the swift current. Best attempted to re-enter the water when he discovered the two did not reach safety, but was swept from his feet by the current.

All occupants of the boat had made similar runs down the river before except Mrs. Allen Temple. The Temples had made boat trips down the North Fork in the vicinity for the last four years and had never regarded the trip as particularly dangerous.

Other members of the party of picnickers, 17 in all and all members of the Temple family, immediately began a search downstream and both bodies were recovered.
