Mrs. Coffman of M-F Area Dies; Native of Weston

Mrs. Floyd (Margaret Shields) Coffman of Route 2, Milton-Freewater died at her residence Thursday afternoon, after a six-week illness.

The daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel Shields, pioneer settlers, Mrs. Coffman was born in Weston in 1893. She lived her entire life in the Weston-Milton district.

Survivors are her husband, at home; three daughters, Mrs. R. C. (Margaret) Lieuallen of Athena, Mrs Neil (Catherine) Swanson and Mrs. James (Norma) Coe of Milton-Freewater; four sons, Elgin Coffman of Athena, Robert L. Coffman of Pasadena, Calif., Thomas Coffman of Myrtle Point, Ore., and Joseph C. Coffman of Forest Grove; two sisters, Mrs Stillman Dempsey of Milton-Freewater and Mrs Fern Byerley of Walla Walla, and two brothers, Frank Shields of Yakima and George Shields of Milton-Freewater.

Sixteen grandchildren also survive, as do numberous nieces and nephews.

Mrs Coffman was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church, of Milton-Freewater.

Margaret J. Lieuallen

Margaret J. Lieuallen of Athena passed away Nov. 7, 1998, at her home: she was 82.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11 am at the Athena First Baptist Church in Athena with Rev. John Nichols officiating. Concluding services and vault interment will be in the Athena Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center or the charity of the donor's choice through the Munselle=Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.

Lieuallen was born Nov. 1, 1916, on Sunnyside Road north of Milton-Freewater, the daughter of Floyd and Mildred Shields Coffman. She grew up on a family farm on Dry Creek, attended Dry Creek County School and in 1935 she graduated from McLaughlin Union High School in M-F on Nov. 18, 1942. She married Ronald "Swede" Lieuallen in M-F. The couple lived and worked on the Lieuallen farm for 23 years until his death on Feb. 23, 1965. Lieuallen remained on the farm until her death.

Throughout her life, she cooked for harvest crews and did seamstress work for many in the community. After her husband died, she began working for the Athena School District as a bus driver and then as a cook until her retirement. She spent many summers working for Bob Winn in the strawberry harvest.

Lieuallen had a gift for making the kitchen seem like such a simple place to be. She was always whipping up something and sharing it with someone. She did beautiful handiwork and enjoyed sharing the finished products with family and friends. In the years since she retired she found new interest and joys in gardening in the yard. Lieuallen especially enjoyed her family and friends of the Athena and M-F areas. In the last few years. she volunteered at the Umatilla County Historical Museum. She was originally a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church in M-F and then later joined the First Baptist Church in Athena. She was also active in the Women's Missionary.

She is survived by three daughters, Lisa Parsons of Athena, Jean Carter of M-F, and Lela Lieuallen of Federal Way, Wash., two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jill Lieuallen of Vancouver, WA, and Ross and Jennifer Lieuallen of Tualatin, OR; a step-daughter, Ronna Richman,; four brothers, Elgin Coffman of M-F, Bob Coffman of San Diego, CA, Jack Coffman of Denver, CO; and Tom Coffman of Myrtle Point, OR; two sisters, Catherine Swanson and Norma Coe, both of College Place; six grandchildren, Rus and Rob Carter, both of M-F; Grant Parsons of Athena, Adam Lieuallen of Vancouver, WA and Josh and Jasmine Lieuallen of Tualatin, OR; four ste-grandchildren, Brad and Brenda Rickman of Tigard, OR, and Zeph and Mark Steen of Crescent City, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lieuallen was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lindsay Parsons, and a step-daughter, Donna Skeen.
