Notes for GEORGE W. STAGGS:

An illustrated history of the state of Oregon : By Rev H K Hines, D.D., Chicago, The Lewis Publishing company, 1893

Page 1236 and 1237

GEORGE W. STAGGS, one of the young and enterprising business men of Weston, was born in Yam Hill County, Oregon, December 20, 1862. His father, Alfred Staggs, is a native of Kentucky, who married Miss Sarah Davis, a native of Missouri. Mr. Staggs emigrated to Oregon in 1852 with his brother. They fitted up an ox team and started on the long journey to the coast. The brother was taken sick and died. His lonely, unnamed grave is on the plains, where his sorrowing relatives were obliged to leave his remains, among the savage Indians. Mr. Staggs was a brickmaker by trade, but in later years he abandoned it for the occupation of farming. He was married in Oregon, and he and his faithful wife lived together until 1872, when death claimed his own and called the beloved wife to her last home, at the age of forty-two. They had five children, and George was the fourth. Only three of these children are now living, two in Idaho and our subject in Oregon.

George received his early education in the common schools of Oregon, and was reared on the farm and to farm work. He followed that occupation until 1888, when he continues to farm in connection with his other business interests. On this farm he grows wheat principally.

In August, 1892, he engaged in the hardware business in Weston, where he carries a stock of $5,000, consisting of all kinds of hardware and agricultural implements. He does a good business for a newcomer in the town, and, as he is well known and liked throughout the entire county, he will command a large trade in time.

Mr. Staggs was married, in 1872, to Miss Martha Pinkerton, daughter of William and Sarah Pinkerton. This lady is also a native of Oregon, and has borne her husband two children, namely: Emery and Beulah, two bright children, who render happy the lives of their parents. Mr. Staggs is a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World, Camp No. 112, of Weston; also a member of K. of P. He votes the Republican ticket, and is a thoroughly respected and representative citizen of Oregon.

8. ERNEST EDMUND4 WALDEN (LENA M3 STAGGS, ALFRED2, THOMAS F1) was born 09 Dec 1881 in Oregon29, and died Jan 196430. He married NELLIE ANGELINE PURDY, daughter of SAMUEL PURDY and ELIZABETH HARTMAN. She was born 17 Nov 1883 in Umatilla,OR31.

Notes for ERNEST EDMUND WALDEN:

Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1949 > March > 13

Ernest E Walden, who has been among other things, assessor in the eastern portion of Umatilla county many years, comes from a family of early settlers in Oregon and Umatilla County.

First Walden Migrated to Area in 1845.

Over a period of 20 years, much of Umatilla county's east end has been assessed by Ernest E Walden of Milton-Freewater. The veteran deputy asessor is a busy beaver right now compiling the statistics from which next year's taxes will be computed. This is his twenty-first year in this highly important assignment.

His territory embraces the district from Pendleton to the state line but due to the late start and the bad roads created by the recent disturbances, he fears he will not be able to cover the territory without some help.

Family an Old One.

Over approximately the same period of time Walden has been a school director in his community. But even more important -- to history-minded folk -- are the unique associations his parents and grandparents had with early development of Oregon.

The Roving Reporter managed on day recently to prevail on the busy deputy assessor to stand still long enough to review some of the Walden family history. This is Walden's busy season.

Came in '45

Benjamin E Walden, my grandfather, came out to Oregon with the big train of 1845," he said, "They were met in Southern Idaho by Marcus Whitman, with the advice that Indians were menacing. One group of California bound men without families decided they would join in with the Oregon bound wagons, making a total of 90 wagons in the train.

"About where La Grande now is the train was met by a large number of chiefs and their warriors. Whitman started a council that lasted far into the night. Finally the peace pipe was lighted and the train breathed easier. When the train reached the top of the Blues, Whitman left and returned to the mission while the immigrants pushed on to the Willamette Valley."

McLoughlin Incident

At Oregon City, Walden's grandfather helped build a house for Dr.McLoughlin. Hudson's Bay company factor at Fort Vancuver. This building more recently became part of the McLoughlin museum.

Not long after, the Waldens were settled in the Waldo hills, six miles east of Salem. There a home was built and in it was born John Walden, more fully referred to presently. Only a few years ago Ernest Walden returned to the Waldo hills and found the original home -- now 100 years old -- still in use, but as part of a tavern.

The present owners revealed that the title for the land originally passed to Ben Walden from the government in 1849.

John to Weston

By 1871 John Walden set up a family domicile near Weston and there Ernest E Walden was born. In due time, Ernest Walden took a shine to Nellie Purdy, over Athena way. She belonged to the same Purdy clan which at one time opereated Bingham Springs. He not only took a shine to Nellie, he married the girl.

Mr and Mrs Walden found some wheat land around Prescott which they liked so well they farmed it for 20 years, and then moved over to the Freewater country, where they have since resided.

Walden has two half-brothers, Orville and Ted, who also live in the Milton-Freewater district.

Hood River News Obituary

Page: 2 April 2003

Paul Walden Retired Oregon radio broadcaster and radio station owner

Paul E. Walden, who served three terms in the Oregon State House of

Representatives in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 85. A memorial service is

planned for Wednesday, April 2, at St. Mark?s Episcopal Church in Hood River,

where he was a longtime member. The Rev. Rustin R. Kimsey, retired Episcopal

Bishop of Eastern Oregon, will deliver the eulogy. Mr. Walden, the father of

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden of Hood River, spent 48 years in radio broadcasting,

working as an engineer and station manager at radio stations in Walla Walla,

LaGrande and Pendleton. He worked at KODL radio in The Dalles for 27 years

before purchasing KIHR radio in Hood River in 1967. He served twice as

president of the Oregon Association of Broadcasters. Mr. Walden earned his

license as a Radiotelephone Operator First Class in 1937, after studying

broadcast engineering at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland. He

acquired his radio amateur (HAM) license in 1934, and remained an active radio

amateur until quite recently, communicating with other radio amateurs around

the globe, both by voice and by Morse Code. He was in the U.S. Army Signal

Corps in 1946 and 1947, stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J. Mr. Walden, who was

born on a wheat ranch near Prescott, Wash., on May 7, 1917, to Ernest Edmund

and Nellie Angeline Purdy Walden, grew up in Milton-Freewater and graduated

from Mac-High in 1935. He was a descendent of Oregon pioneers; his family came

to the Oregon Territory by wagon train in 1845. The diary that his

great-grandmother, Sarah J. Walden Cummins, kept of her journey on the Oregon

Trail has been published as ?The Autobiography and Reminiscences of Sarah J.

Cummins.? Mr. Walden?s survivors include three sons and their wives: Bob and

Connie Walden of Phoenix, Ariz.; Bill and Sandy Walden of Gresham; and Greg

and Mylene Walden of Hood River. He also is survived by a stepson, two

stepdaughters, and their spouses: Mike and Val Tenney of The Dalles; Barb and

Mitch Hosford of Hood River and Jo Ann and Lewis Wixon of The Dalles. Other

survivors include two grandsons, Mathew Walden of Gresham and Anthony Walden

of Hood River, and two sisters, Eleanor Day of Kellog, Idaho, and Ginger Delk

of Ridgecrest, Calif. In 1940 in LaGrande, he married Betty McEwen, who died

in 1990. His second wife, Ethel Mae Tenney Walden, died in 1999. He served as

a lay reader in the Episcopal Church for 50 years, and had been a member of

the Diocesan Council for the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, serving for

two years as council chairman. Mr. Walden, who greatly appreciated hearing -

and telling - a good story, also was a community activist. He was named First

Citizen of The Dalles in 1956, where he was president of Kiwanis, twice

president of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the chamber?s

board of directors. He chaired The Dalles Dam dedication committee, and served

as the master of ceremonies when then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon

dedicated the dam in the mid-1950s. He was a former Exalted Ruler of the Hood

River Elks Lodge, and also was a member of Hood River Rotary, the Pendleton

Masonic Lodge, Al Kader Shrine and Portland Valley of the Scottish Rite. The

family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Gorge, c/o Anderson?s Tribute

Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031. 1

Graduated from the University of Oregon in engineering even though he never went into the profession. He met Grandmother Bernice at the University (she completed 2 years), married her, and took up sheep and cattle ranching at Keating, 17 miles outside Baker, Oregon. Bernice had been raised around Baker. Somehow they acquired land from her father, Great Grandad Fred Philips, to begin ranching. Basically Fred split his ranch holdings between his son and daughter (Wayne and Bernice), then he semi-retired to Baker City.

Grandad Staggs was a past President of the Oregon Woolgrowers Association, a participant in many Oregon state functions (I remember going to Portland with them when he had to attend State Welfare Commission meetings), a member of the National Forestry Advisory Board, and after retiring from ranching he became president of the local Chamber of Commerce.

But most of all Grandad Staggs was an avid fisherman. He liked fishing of any type: flyfishing at East Eagle, Salmon Fishing at the Columbia River Bar or Winchester Bay, Steelhead fishing along the Columbia and Snake Rivers, or lake fishing in his boat, the "Chary-Lyn" named after my two sisters: Chary and Linda. Naturally I was the captain from the time I was six years old. Mostly I remember getting out of grade school on a Friday afternoon and having my grandparents waiting patiently, boat in tow, everything (sleeping bags, food, tent, clothes) packed, ready to pick me up and go for a week end fishing trip to a local reservoir. The food that grandmother cooked in a little wood burning "sheepherders" stove was among the best food I have ever tasted. Somehow the number of fish that we caught is not my biggest memory-but just being there with them."

Notes for LOIS ELAINE BEAMER:

Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1974 > February > 24, page 122

WESTON – When Mrs. W. H. (Lois Fletcher of Enterprise read the Union-Bulletin’s "Horse Era" series, she recalled days of her youth on a farm near here in the same period.

What she recalled is also a tribute to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Beamer.

Two other children of the Beamers are Archie Beamer of Ellensburg and Mrs. Walt (Geraldine) Roloff of Milton Freewater.

"The past came before me in vivid recollection as I read the article in your paper during my lunch break" Mrs. Fletcher wrote the U-B editor. "The article on the Buroker family was most interesting and I remember the family name as there were Burokers attending school in Milton-Freewater where I was reared"

That was the introduction. What Mrs. Fletcher wrote about her childhood and her parents’ work in the Weston-Milton-Freewater community follows.

No one person enjoyed their youth, the tough times growing up and the happiness we all had anymore than I did.

A child of the depression, I never felt that our family was poor – just without money. We weren’t poor, because we were a complete family and had a mother and father who saw to it that we had much happiness… happiness in doing things together, worshipping together, picnicking together, working together, playing together, laughing together and weeping together.

As the Burokers, I too can remember my father selling his 22 head of mules for a Caterpillar. We all cried when the mules were taken from the ranch. Had we any money, I think we would have kept the mules too, just for sentimental reasons.

Without money we had to barter. Dad bought the tractor with the money from the sale of the mules. We traded wheat flour (by the barrel), sugar (by the 100-pound sack), beans and any and all staple goods. We dried, (tons of it, it seemed) of corn; canned 250-300 quarts of peaches and a near amount of other fruits and vegetables. These jobs wouldn’t have seemed too tedious but Mother was up before dawn to get Dad’s breakfast and have him to the barn by daybreak. She baked all the bread and pastries and heated water in a wash boiler for doing the laundry.

We, too, cooked for and bedded down from 2 to 30 hired men during the spring and summer months. Added to this were the city cousins whose parents always sent them to our farm so they wouldn’t run the streets during the summer months. I think we always had at least two under foot and helpless as … you know what!

On one occasion I can remember Mother making whipped jello with fruit and whip cream in a large porcelain dish pan in order to have enough for everyone. Well, the kids gulped their basic food down to get to the shipped jello. Would you believe – yes, I think you would—those kids left hardly enough dessert for the men in one helping.

Another remembrance is that of Dad borrowing all he could against several life insurance policies in order to have operating capital and make mortgage payments. He had lost what small amount of money we had two different times when the banks closed their doors… first in the bank at Weston, then at the Milton bank.

Several years later, Dad sought help from the Baker-Boyer Bank in Walla Walla. Naturally, they were a bit dubious, as most small farmers just couldn’t hold things together, feed a family of five and help feed and care for other relatives and friends who didn’t have enough to eat or wear.

Anyway, Mr. Baker passed by the ranch one day to talk with Dad regarding this sought-after loan. He found Dad taking apart, trying to overhaul and put the tractor back in running shape. Mr. Baker asked if Dad was a mechanic. Of course, the answer was "no, but where there is a will there is a way."

Dad got the loan and Mr Baker felt Dad would stick with anything, no matter how tough and he always did. Dad not only got the loan, he succeeded in holding onto his land during the depression and became a very successful wheat rancher, as well as a purebred Hereford rancher.

We Kids, a brother older and a sister younger than I, never knew the sleepless nights our folks must have endured in order that their children would become the successful and commendable citizens they are today. We have them to thank for any happiness or success we have had because of the sound religious background and the stern but fair discipline by which we were reared.

We three wanted to go to college, so we had to pitch in and raise some kind of extra crop which could be harvested, netting us money for tuition, books, etc. As well as working in the cannery, I raised grass seed and one year netted around $850 to put me through one year of school.

I am sure we all knew what a dollar was and am sure of another thing; the dollar went farther than it does now!

If I recall right, my Dad held down three jobs and carried out his ranching operation while we kids were in college, to say nothing of Mom driving the school bus for discounted warrants instead of money. Dad surveyed, worked at the ASC office in Pendleton, leased timbered land and cut wood to sell.

Dad became manager of the ASC office in Pendleton where he worked for 27 or 28 years he was voted Oregon’s Conservation Man of the Year in 1952 for "practicing what he preaches," as they stated in newspapers at the time.

Dad was president of the Eastern Oregon Wheat League in 1945-46 and served as a board member of the Federal Land Bank for several years.

Mom was an outstanding woman in her community: advisor to Camp Fire; received the Outstanding Service award in the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs for her service to the Women’s Improvement Club in Milton-Freewater for over 45 years and the same in the Saturday Afternoon Club in Weston for over 50 years. In 1967 she was chosen queen of the Umatilla County Pioneer’s Reunion, at Weston.

People wonder why my Dad doesn’t have hobbies such as rock-collecting, golf, tennis or whatever. He never had time – but, I’ll bet he would have enjoyed each he might have chosen. His ranching and success have been his whole life. He loved every pinch of soil on every inch of that ranch and would still like to be on his late model machinery readying everything for the harvest.

Ill health had necessitated the sale of the ranch, but my parents have retained the home and several acres, so Dad could raise a few Herefords for his enjoyment.
