Coffey County, in the third tier of counties from the Missouri line, and the fourth tier from Oklahoma, is bounded on the north by Osage county; on the east by Franklin and Anderson; on the south by Woodson, and on the west by Greenwood and Lyon. Its area is 648 square miles, and it was named for Col. A. M. Coffey, a member of the first territorial legislature.

The first known settlement of white men within the county was made in the Neosho valley in 1854 by Frederick Troxel, who built a log cabin on the old Indian trail about three-fourths of a mile south of the present town of Le Roy and moved there with his family. Mrs. Troxel's brother, Gen. John B. Scott, the founder of Le Roy, was at that time an Indian trader at the Sac and Fox agency. The Indian trail extended from the agency southwest through Coffey county, crossing the Neosho river where Burlington now stands, where the Indians had a burial ground, and continuing to the Buffalo hunting grounds in the Indian Territory. A small colony from New York, including Ahijah Jones and his son, George, William R. and Alban Saunders, settled at the present location of Le Roy in Dec., 1854. They brought their families the next year. Washington Vickery and Levi Heddens (who is said to have been the first man to cross the Neosho river in a wagon) were here in 1854, but did not locate until 1855. Others who came in 1855 were, Dr. Hamilton Smith, a free-state man prominent in territorial struggles, Morgan Dix, Simpson Despain, Hiram Hoover, Judge Strawn and Joe Lebo, all of whom settled near the present site of Ottumwa, and Mr. Crall on Lebo creek, also the "Hampden Colony" consisting of 100 men and women from Hampden, Mass.

WOODSON COUNTY

KANSAS

Founding Pioneer

History

OF

Allen and Woodson Counties

ILLUSTRATED

1901

ALEXANDER HAMILTON

Woodson County figures as one of the most attractive,

progressive and prosperous divisions of the state of Kansas, justly

claiming a high order of citizenship and spirit of enterprise which

is certain to conserve consecutive development and marked advancement in the

material up building of this section. The county has been signally favored

in the class of men who have controlled its affairs, and in the connection

the subject of this review demands representation as one who has served

the county faithfully and well on positions of district trust and responsibility.

Moreover he has been one of the most extensive stock dealers and leading business

men of Southeastern Kansas, and is one of the honored pioneers of the commonwealth,

having come to the state in its territorial days.

Mr. Hamilton was born in Gallatin County, Kentucky, September 12th,

1832. His father, John O. Hamilton, was also a native of that state and

there married Miss Hannah Gregg, whose birth occurred in the same

locality. They were the parents of ten children, of whom our subject

was the second in the order of birth. He was reared on the home farm and

attended the common schools until sixteen years of age when he went to

Covington College and later became a student in Western Collegiate Institute

of Patriot, Indiana. He was afterward graduated in a business college in

Marietta, Ohio, and later in a law college in Louisville. When eighteen

years of age he went to Tennessee, where he engage in teaching

school for two years after which he returned to his old Kentucky home and

took up the study of law, being admitted to the bar in 1854.

The following year Mr. Hamilton came to Kansas, locating in

Leavenworth, whence he went to Council Bluffs, Ia., but not liking that

place he returned to Missouri, taking up his abode in Clinton County.

Soon the border war came on and he was appointed captain of a company and

saw some arduous and dangerous service. With his company he came to Kansas,

where he met Governor Geary with whom he held a consultation. Captain Hamilton,

wishing to make his home in Kansas, surrendered his command and took up

his abode in the Sunflower state, which has since been his place of residence.

Not long afterward the Civil War was inaugurated and for a time he was

connected with the home guards. He afterward entered the employ of the

government as wagon master and later received an appointment as suffer, being

thus associated with the army for a number of months. He was next

appointed to buy cattle for the Indians and can relate many hair-breadth escapes

which he had while in the United States service among the red men.

Mr. Hamilton first settled in Leroy, Coffey County, and began the

practice of law before the county was organized. He attended the legislature

of 1857, succeeded in having the county established and was appointed by

the assembly to the offices of County Clerk and Register of Deeds. He

purchased a large body of land in the vicinity of Leroy, and

at the same time conducted a large general mercantile store, so

that he was kept very busy in managing his agricultural and commercial

affairs, in addition to his law practice and the discharge of his

official duties.

On the 22nd, of February, 1858, Mr. Hamilton was married and

continued to reside in Coffey County until 1875, when he sold his land there

and came to his present home in Woodson County, purchasing six hundred

and forty acres on Cherry creek in Evertt Township, where he has since

developed a very fine and highly improved farm. He has purchased

and sold more cattle than any other stock dealer in the county, handling

thousands of head, but in late years, on account of his advanced age,

he has largely retired from that business, feeding only a small number

of cattle. He has recently purchased property in Leroy, including

part of his old homestead.

The lady who for forty-three years has traveled life’s journey

by his side as his faithful wife and helpmate was in her maidenhood Lucinda

Jane Scott, and she is the oldest lady member of the Old Settlers’

Association of Coffey, Allen, and Woodson Counties. She is a daughter of

General John B. Scott, who was a native of Virginia and when a small

boy accompanied his parents on their removal to Bloomington, Illinois. There

he was reared and married, the lady of his choice being Miss Anna Davis,

of New York. Anna died shortly after Jane’s birth and John would marry

Anna’s sister, Lucinda Adams, whom their daughter had been named after.

In an early day he went to Iowa as a trader with the Indians, and in 1849

came with the Sac and Fox Indians to Kansas. The red men at that time owed

him twenty thousand dollars and he came to collect it. He settled at Scott’s

Town, as it was known by the Indians, and later named Leroy, where he was

appointed Major General of the Kansas Home Guards. General Scott would

command the Troops of the Neosho Valley Home Guard contingent of the 9th

Kansas Calvary, during the Civil War. He and his command were garrisoned

at Fort Scott during this conflict. The First and Second All Indian Home

Guard Units were attached to his command. His death occurred in 1873, when

he was fifty-seven years of age. His second wife died in 1880. General

Scott was the founder of Leroy and was Indian agent for many years, both

in Iowa and Kansas. He was the Justice of the Peace of Coffey County,

and like his future son-in-law would serve the Bogus Legislature of Kansas

in 1857.

Unto Mr. And Mrs. Hamilton have been born fourteen children, of whom

twelve are now living: Mrs. T. W. Plummer and Mrs, Fred Pearl, both

of Yates Center; John O., of Vernon; Charles C., a twin brother of John and

a farmer by occupation; Mrs. Ed Vetito, of Yates Center; Alex O., who aids in

the work of the home farm, Gus R., who served with the Twentieth Kansas Regiment

in the Philippines and is now in Vernon; Herbert, a barber in Yates Center,

Clarence P., who was also a member of the Twentieth Kansas Regiment and

is now in Joliet, Illinois; Grace, who is in business in Yates Center, is

wife of Eber Holiday; S. Wallace, who is also in the county seat, and Nellie

at home. Alice, the third child, died at the age of three, and Stanley died

at one year old.

Mr. Hamilton has always taken an active interest in public

affairs, pertaining to the welfare of his community and has held

several local offices. He was the first postmaster of Vernon, has filed

the position of justice of the peace and for two years was a Sheriff of

Woodson County. His popularity in the community is unmistakable not

only on account of his fidelity to duty in public office, but also

because of his honorable business career, his fidelity to manly principles

and his reliability in private life. During the long years of his

residence in Kansas he has left the impress of his individuality for good

upon the communities with which he has been connected and he feels just pride

in the splendid advancement made by his adopted state.

tions of early pioneer life and twice an the year 1878 was forced to leave Helix on account of the hostility of the Indians and seek refuge an Fort Walla Walla. However, he persevered and his determination and energy overcame the obstacles in the path of material advancement, while changing conditions, brought about by the settlement of the country, soon obviated the necessity of protecting against Indian attack. In 19o5, after many years successfully devoted to farming, he retired from active agricultural life and removed to Walla Walla, where he remained until called to his final home, on January I8, 1915 .

Mr. Scott was united n marriage to Miss Anna D. Caplinger, a daughter of Jacob and Jane (Woodside) Caplinger, of Salem, Oregon. They crossed the plains from Fulton county, Illinois, to Oregon an 1845 and settled in Oregon City but after two years removed to Marion county, that state, taking up their abode on the prairie four miles east of Salem, where they remained until called to their final rest. The father died on the 2oth of June, 19o4, and the mother survived only until the 26th of July of the same year. In 1845, on their journey across the plains, which was made by way of the Mount Hood route, they were there snowbound for more than three weeks with no food but coffee for several

days.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott became the parents of nine children, namely Mary L., who is the wife of J. M. Richardson, of R, salia; Emma J., who gave her hand in marriage to Dr E. A. Mann, of Portland, Oregon; John A.., who resides in Lacrosse, Washington; Ira C., who operates the home farm for his mother, now residing in Walla Walla; Ray W., who passed away in i9o2 , when sixteen years of age; and Alexander, Charles, Walter and Bertha, who are also deceased.

In his political views Mr Scott was a stalwart democrat and in 189o he was a candidate for county judge of Umatilla county. His life was that of a consistent Christian and for more than twenty years he was an elder in the Church of Christ at Helix. He was also a public-spirited citizen and a factor in the advancement of the county's welfare and interests along many lines. Death called him January 18, 1915. A modern philosopher has said: "Not the good that comes to us, but the good that comes to the world through us, is the measure of our success", and judged by that standard Mr. Scott was a most successful man, for he went about doing good, extending a helping hand to the poor and needy, assisting in the work of general improvement and shedding around him

much of life's sunshine. His widow now occupies a beautiful home on South Division street in Walla Walla. She, too, as a member of the Church of Christ and gives liberally to its support and in charitable work, her benevolences being many.

An illustrated history of Umatilla County page 457

WILLIAM M. SCOTT,--Notable among the men who have lifted Umatilla county into the prominence that she now enjoys, and who, but their consummate skill and tenacity have demonstrated the wealth of her once barren hills, is he whose name stands at the head of this article. A man of varied and bright talent, with irrepressible energy and cool judgment for every occasion, his life has been on round of constant activity both among men as well as in the vanguard of pioneer activities.

The son of John B. and Rena Halsey Scott, he was born in McLean County, Illinois, on December 29, 1837, and there passed the first eighteen years of his life. His education was that which the common schools of that day afforded, supplemented by the acquirements of an enquiring and active mind. His adventurous spirit early led him to the great fields of the west, first in Kansas, then in northwest Missouri, later in Kansas again, and in 1860 he was on his way across the plains to California. Here he remained for one year and then turned toward the Willamette Valley, in which place he staid only until the following spring, when he crossed the mountains and first visited this county. That was in 1862, the year of the famous Salmon river gold excitement, through which he passed all the various stages. After this he turned his attention to freighting, operating from Wallula to Lewiston, and later from The Dalles to the Idaho mines. In the fall of 1863 he returnee to Salem and resided there for seven years. At this last date he re-crossed the mountains into the Ochoco country near Plineville, and continued there in handling stock for eight years. In 1878 he came to this county again and took up a homestead, pre-emption, and timber culture claims where he now lives, one mile southeast from Helix. His first experience in searching for water on these claims was discouraging, but afterward he found that if he continued to dig down into the rock he could get plenty of living water. One of his claims he sold for twenty dollars shortly after locating, and bought it back recently for four thousand two hundred dollars. He has increased his holding to one whole section of first class wheat land, that produces him thirty-two bushels per acre annually. He farms eight hundred acres altogether. His son also owns one-half section adjoining. He has embellished his estate with buildings and improvements, an elegant two-story residence, commodious barn and substantial outbuilding of all kinds necessary, well selected and kept orchard, etc., that manifest plainly both his practical judgment and excellent taste. The water needed for house and barn purposes is supplied from two fine reservoirs fed by living water which by direct pressure is conveyed to the rooms of his dwelling and for use in the stock corals. By this unique method Mr. Scott has his house as well supplied with all the conveniences of hit and cold water, bath, etc., as is found in the best city residences.

Our subject was married to Miss Annie D. Caplinger, the daughter of Jacob and Jane Caplinger, of Salem, Pioneers of 1845, on April 2, 1865, and the following children have crowned their union: Mary L., married to J.M. Richardson; Emma J., Wife of Dr. E.A.. Mann, of Pendleton; John A; Ira C; Ray W., All of whom are living, and the following who have died; Alexander, Charles, Walter and Bertha. In political affairs he has ever been a champion of the uprightness and integrity that characterize him, and in most of the county conventions he is a prominent member. Four years ago he ran on the Democratic ticket, that being the party to which he adheres, for county judge. He avows himself as a Prohibition Democrat. His church membership is in the Church of Christ, and his life is a potent influence for good in his community.
