Churches of Christ & Christian Churches

in the Pacific Northwest

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NORTHERN IDAHO

Vollmer / Troy Mapquest

Originally named Vollmer by banker John Vollmer, the name of the town was changed at his death to Troy. Because of his farm foreclosures, the citizens did not want to immortalize his name.

Troy Christian Church

Linus Rogers of Moscow held a gospel meeting at Vollmer (the one in Latah County) in 1892 and organized a church with 47 members. An alternate report is that 16 were charter members and 60 others were quickly added.

The charter members included: M. B. and Margaret Peterson; Allen W. Henry; Susan and Phoebe Summers; John C., Leona, Jane and Julia Daniels; Dora, Ida and William Robinson; S. Y. Addington; Basil Hall and William Plunkett.

The building was located at East Fifth Avenue and Elm, the west corner of the intersection.

Students from Spokane University preached at Troy on the weekends. Passenger train service was frequent.

In 1903 Emmett A. LaDow was preaching at Troy full time. The church was still active in the 1940s. In 1986 the property was donated to the school district.

THOMAS H. LADOW

AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF NORTH IDAHO EMBRACING NEZ PERCES, IDAHO, LATAH, KOOTENAI, AND SHOSHONE COUNTIES STATE OF IDAHO

WESTERN HISTORICAL PUBLISHING COMPANY, 1903

THOMAS H. LADOW. This worthy pioneer has done much to open this western country for the abode of his fellows. He is worthy of a place in the history of northern Idaho and it is with pleasure that we accord him consideration. He is a man of integrity and strong character, and has manifested great energy and enterprise in his course.

Thomas H. LaDow was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on August 22, 1853, being the son of John and Cornelia (Geer) LaDow. The father was born in Ohio, in 1819, and was a pioneer in Wisconsin and Minnesota, being in the last state at the time of the Sioux uprising. He was also a pioneer in Washington. The mother of our subject was born in New York in June 1826. The family went to Wisconsin, and in 1859 went thence to Dayton, Ohio, returning again to Wisconsin: Thomas distinctly remembers the debates between Lincoln and Douglas. They went from Wisconsin to Minnesota, and in 1868 came across the plains with ox teams to Walla Walla. Four years after that the father went to unsurveyed land north from Palouse and settled, and that is the home where our subject remained until twenty. In November, 1873, he began carrying the mail from Lewiston to Spokane, there being no town at Spokane, only a store or so, and no town between that and Lewiston. This was the first mail route into Spokane. Until 1882 the mail was carried on horseback, and in that year Mr. LaDow got the contract for himself. He then put on a four-horse stage. Two years later he sold out and took a line from Colfax to Cheney. In 1884 he went to the Coeur d'Alene mines and there operated until his exchequer was empty; then he returned to staging. He operated the first line from Moscow to Colfax, and then he took the line from Farmington to Spokane and later bought a livery stable in Moscow. In 1886 Mr. LaDow went on the road as a traveling sales-man for farm implements, and in a short time he went to farming near Palouse. In March 1896, he carne to the reservation and took his present place three miles south and two east from Melrose. He has a good farm, well tilled, fine barn and orchard and also handles considerable other land.

On November 9, 1884, at Moscow, Mr. LaDow married Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Amos arid Mary (Gwin) Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a pioneer to Whitman County in 1874. Mrs. LaDow was born in Dakota in 1863 and has two sisters and one brother, Nora Whitson, Hiram and Jennie Ames. Mr. LaDow has the following brothers and sisters: Josephine, Emmett A., Lora Palmer, Hattie Cox and Stella McConnell. Two sons have been born to Mr. and Mrs. LaDow, Leonard, and Floyd, deceased. They are members of the Christian church in Melrose. Mr. LaDow is clerk of the school board and has been since the district was organized. He is greatly interested in good schools and general progress. Mr. LaDow is a stanch Republican and his friends strongly urged him to accept the office of county commissioner.

By way of reminiscence it is of note that Mr. LaDow was present when the volunteers, Captain Randall, Lew Willmott, James Curley, C. M. Day, Josh Rowden, and Joe Moore, were surrounded by the Indians and Captain Randall and Joe Moore were killed almost in sight of the soldiers. Mount Idaho was but a trading post and Grangeville was not then built.

Alpha G. 'Cody' Cox Dead after Long Career

Alpha G. "Cody" Cox, 85, resident of Walla Walla off and on since 1902, died Thursday afternoon in a local nursing where he had been a patient several months. He had been in ill health several years since he fell in the bachelors' quarters at the Elks Lodge Building and broke a leg.

Cox was widely known as an athlete in his younger years and as a bowler and golfer in later life. He was born July 6, 1884, on the family ranch near Palouse, Wash. He finished high school there in 1902 enrolling in Pearson's Academy, then a division of Whitman College, which he attended two years. He finished his freshman year at Whitman participating in basketball, track, baseball and football. Academy students then being considered eligible.

As the University of Michigan under Fielding (Hurry-Up) Yost was nationally famous then, Cox headed east attending the Ann Arbor institution a year then went to Notre Dame specializing in track events. There Cox became acquainted with C. W. (Bill) Martin of Walla Walla who was starring on the Notre Dame track team.

After his period at Notre Dame he worked as a Great Lakes freighter lookout and as a guard at a Worcester, Mass., mental hospital. Returning to the family ranch he spent a year there then went to Seattle working there several years just before World War I.

In the meantime his parents had moved to an acreage on the State Line near Walla Walla, the father purchasing a small print shop here which Cody eventually took over operating it throughout his later life.

His father died in 1930 and Cox lived with his mother until her death in 1940 when he moved to the Elks bachelor quarters.

Cox joined the Elks Lodge in Moscow, Idaho, in 1919, transferring his membership here in 1923. He had served as chairman of the Elks cooks and waiters committee since 1927. In 1938, he became a life Member of the lodge and in 1967 received the Elk of the Year award from the Walla Walla lodge.

He began bowling as a youth in Palouse continuing in that sport some 40 years. He was secretary of the Walla Walla Valley Bowling Association until 1963 and continued bowling some years thereafter.

Cox was a member of the 40 years serving as its tournament chairman several years and winning its senior championship one year. He also helped the late R. F. (Nig) Borleske coach at Whitman, handling track duties that were assumed later by Bill Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, in the DeWitt Memorial Chapel with Chaplain L. E. Cousins officiating. Chapel ritualistic services will be conducted by BPOE No. 287 of Walla Walla Interment will follow at the Palouse Memorial Cemetery in Palouse, Wash., with graveside services and final interment at 3 p.m.

Cox never married. Survivors are nephew: John Cox and LaVonne Cox, both of Milton-Freewater and three nieces, Mrs. Bethel Smith, Mrs. Harold (Claudine) Smith and Mrs. Ralph (Roberta) Haer, all of Walla Walla and a number of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Of Pioneer Russell Cr. Family

John Yenney Named 1970 WW Cattleman

John Yenney, Walla Walla County Cattleman of the Year for 1970 is farming land which has been in the Yenney family for over 100 years.

His great-grandfather, Phillip Yenney, first settled here in 1860, just a quarter mile above where the '70 Cattleman is presently farming on Russell Creek in the nigh-foothill region of the Blue Mountains.

Those foothills are so high, as a matter of fact, you can look right out onto them from the Yenney kitchen.

Yenney was born here as was his father, Frank Yenney who farmed the same piece of ground as the award winner.

There are some obvious differences in farming methods, mechanical operations and almost anything connected with farming or raising cattle as a major source of income for that operatrion.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY . . . It was an 80th anniversary for Mrs. Ellen C. Perry on Sunday that brought all but one of her children home to help her celebrate the milestone. A family dinner and gathering at 319 West Cherry Street was shared by the guest of honor, four sons and one daughter and their respective families . . . Living in Walla Walla are sons, Virgil and James F., the latter with his wife and son, Ronnie, and Mrs. Perry's only daughter, Miss Marie Perry. Coming from Portland were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Perry and from Spokane, Mr. and Mrs. William T. Perry, Mark and Val. Son, Eldon of Lakeview, Ore., was unable to make it for the celebration . . . But on hand, too, were Mrs. Perry's sister, Mrs. Margaret Rioth of Spokane, and a brother, Bill Byrne, of Garfield . . .Mrs. Perry is a thorough-going Westerner, having been born in California. She came to the Palouse country in early days with her parents, her father, Michael J. Byrne, having been a pioneer settler. She was married there to the late S.S. Perry and they later homesteaded in Idaho, lived for a time in Boise and in 1919 she came to Walla Walla which has since been her home.
