Gilbert, Frank T. "Historic Sketches of Walla Walla, Whitman, Columbia and

Garfield Counties, Washington Territory; and Umatilla County, Oregon."

House of A. G. Walling, 1882. p. a8.

NATHAN T. CATON of Walla Walla, who gained his prominence at the Bar, through a persistent exercise of talents peculiarly adapting him to that position, is counted among the most successful and prominent attorneys in Washington Territory. He is a man of nervous temperament, positive ideas, and an active mind, but though possessed of strong feelings, and by some may be considered capable of prejudice, yet the writer has seen him so farm control such feelings, as to do his enemies the justice to write and speak in complimentary terms of them. It may be strongly asserted that he is true to his instincts of friendship, that his friends know where to find him, and so do his enemies. Born in St. Louis, January 6, 1832, he, at sixteen years of age, entered the mercantile business as a salesman and bookkeeper, and a year later crossed the plains to California. In 1850, he reached Oregon, and resided in Marion county, where he taught school for years, prosecuting the study of law at the same time. In 1856, he became, and remained for four years, Postmaster at Salem, after which the people elected him County Clerk. While serving in this last capacity, he was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of that state, at its December term of 1861.In 1866, he went to Idaho (leaving his family in Oregon) and for a year edited the Owyhee Bulletin of Silver City. While in that Territory the Democrats placed his name upon their ticket for the position of County Judge, and he withdrew it, refusing to run. Later he was elected to the Legislature of Idaho, but being ineligible, did not serve. In September, 1867, he moved with his family to Walla Walla, since when he has practiced his profession and continued his residence in this city. In 1869 he was elected from this county to the Territorial Legislature of Washington, was re-elected in 1873, and became Speaker of the House. One term he served as District Attorney, was the Democratic candidate, in 1878, for Territorial Delegate at Washington, and was defeated by his Republican opponent, T. H. Brents, and lastly, while absent in San Francisco, Cal., was elected, in 1882, a member of the Council in Walla Walla City.

In 1853, April 14, he was married to Miss Martha A. Herren, of Marion county, Oregon, and the dates of birth and names of their children are as follows: Edwin, July 22, 1854; George W., March 28, 1856; Martha L., September 11, 1857; Bertha C., September 25, 1864, died November 15, 1878.

"An Illustrated History of The Big Bend Country, embracing Lincoln, Douglas, Adams and Franklin counties, State of Washington", published by Western Historical Publishing Co., 1904.

HON. NATHAN T. CATON. This is a name well and favorably known throughout Washington. Eminent as a jurist the subject of this article is one of the earliest of pioneers in the Big Bend country, having come here anterior to the creation of Washington as a territory.

Nathan T. Caton, now a prominent attorney residing at Davenport, Lincoln county, was born at St. Louis, January 6, 1832. His parents were George W. and Sarah H. (Moore) Caton, the father a native of Alexandria, Virginia; the mother of Westmoreland county, Maryland. The paternal grandfather was an Irishman and served with distinction in the Revolution, and our subject well remembers hearing him describe the battle of Monmouth. He died at the advanced age of ninety-eight years. The father of Judge Caton, who was by avocation a tailor, was born in 1800 and passed away at the conclusion of the Civil War, in 1865. The maternal grandfather was Nathan Moore, a soldier during the War of 1812. He participated in the battle of Bladensburg, at the time Washington city was burned by the British, and the mother of our subject was in that city at the time.

The parents of Judge Caton removed to Booneville, Missouri, when he was less than a year old. Subsequently he was matriculated in the Columbia University, at Columbia, Boone county, but his father having met with financial reverses, he was compelled to leave college in his senior year, and before graduating. He then entered a mercantile house as salesman and bookkeeper, and in 1849, when seventeen years of age, crossed the plains to California, driving an ox team. There he mined for a few months and early in the fifties went to Oregon where he taught school in the far-famed Willamette valley. Returning to California in the spring of 1851 he remained there five months, then went back to the Willamette valley where he was located when the act creating the territory of Washington was passed by congress. In 1857 he was appointed postmaster of Salem, Oregon, serving four years, when he was elected clerk of Marion county. He read law with Governor Lafayette Grover, who was later United States senator from Oregon, since which period he has practiced continuously. In 1866 he removed to Silver City, Owyhee county, Idaho, practicing his profession, mining and conducting for a time a newspaper, the Owyhee Bullion. With his family he came to Walla Walla, Washington, practiced his profession and was three times elected to the legislature. During his last term Judge Caton introduced bills creating Douglas, Franklin, Adams and Asotin counties, writing personally all of these measures and introducing them. He was speaker of the house in 1872. He served one term as prosecuting attorney during the territorial days, and in 1898 was elected prosecuting attorney of Lincoln county, serving four years.

April 14, 1853, our subject was married to Martha A. Herren, a native of Indiana. The ceremony was solemnized at Salem, Oregon. Her father, John, was a native of Kentucky, born in 1799. He crossed the plains frown Indiana so early as 1845, and died near Salem, Oregon, in 1864. Her mother was Dosha (Robbins) Herren. Mrs. Caton has two brothers and three sisters living: Levi M.; Noah F.; Susannah, widow of William T. Wallace; Jane, widow of John B. Keizer, and Sarilda R., wife of T. S. Leonard.

Judge Caton is a member of the K. P., of which he is past chancellor; of the A. F. & A. M., being past master; of the R. A. M., and has attended grand lodge as delegate many times. He was present and assisted in the organization of the first grand lodge of K. P. in Tacoma, and was department supreme chancellor two terms under Supreme Chancellor S. S. Davis. Judge and Mrs. Caton are members of the Christian church. Politically, he is a Democrat and prominent in the councils of that party.

The session laws of 1872 contain a bill passed by the territorial legislature to prevent extortions by railroads. This bill was written, introduced and fought to its passage by the subject of this sketch. Though afterwards repealed by force brought to bear by Henry Villard, then president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, it will be seen that the origin of the railroad legislation of the sort that is rightly so dear to the people of eastern Washington at the present time dates back to 1872 and to a resident of this county, Hon. Nathan T. Caton.

Davenport

The Honorable Nathan T. Caton was connected with the church in Davenport. Mr. Caton had moved from Salem, Oregon where he was the postmaster four years and then the county clerk. He and his wife Martha Ann moved to Walla Walla in 1867 where he established a law practice. He was elected to the Territorial Legislature in 1869 and again in 1873. He became Speaker of the House.

The Catons moved to Sprague and during those years he was County Judge. Later he moved to Davenport. When the churches divided over the use of the instrument, Mr. Caton remained with the Churches of Christ.

Davenport Christian Church

Other names connected with the Davenport church are Charles C. Gibson and Charles Hughes.

The building does not show on the fire map of 1902, but does on the map of 1909. It is the same building exhibited in the photo. It was located at the southwest corner of Merriam (or Merriem) and 9th. The satellite photo does not reveal a building at that location now. To build a structure of that size, the congregation had been meeting somwhere in rented quarters and saving its pennies.

There were other congregations in Lincoln County that left little or no record. John F. Cagle was connected to the Church of Christ at Earl and Thomas J. Cardwell was connected to the congregation at Harrington.

EDWIN H. CATON

A prominent resident of Athena, Umatilla county, is Edwin H. Caton, who for many years engaged in farming in this county but is now living retied, enjoying the fruits of his diligence and industry. He is a native son of Oregon, his birth having occurred in Marion county, on the 22d of July, 1854, a son of Nathan T. and Martha A. (Harren) Caton. The father was born near St. Louis, Missouri, and when about nineteen years of age came west, making the journey by way of the Isthmus of Panama and settling in San Francisco for a short time.

For one year he followed mining, in which venture he achieved a substantial measure of success, but gave up that occupation in 1852, and removed to Willamette Valley, Oregon, taking up a donation claim in Lane county. He later obtained some land in Marion county near Salem, on which he built a log house and resided thereon for a number of years. He was a prominent man of his community and held various public offices. During the administration of President Buchanan he was appointed to the office of postmaster and he served as county clerk a number of terms, likewise representing Wallowa county in thelegislature for two terms. Nathan T. Caton had devoted considerable time to the study of law and soon after his removal to Lincoln county he was called upon to fill the office of district attorney. He was attorney for the Northern Pacific Railroad and in 1896 was a presidential elector. Mr. Caton continued his professional practice until his retirement a few years before his death, which occurred at the home of his daughter in Rothland, B. C. He was then eighty-three years old and had lived a useful life. His political allegiance was given to the democratic party, his religious faith was that of the Christian church, and his fraternal affiliations were with the Masons and Knights of Pythias. Nathan T. Caton enlisted in the Union army, during the Civil war and served bravely and gallantly. He saw active service in the Mexican war and likewise participated in the Indian wars of southern Oregon. He married Miss Martha A. Harren, on the 14th of April, 1853. She was born in Decatur county, Indiana, and in 1845 crossed the plains with her parents, who made the trip as members of a wagon train. Many hardships were endured during the journey and they were the center of several Indian attacks. They followed the old Oregon Trail and were lost trying to find the Meeks cutoff, nearly starving before they reached The Dalles, Oregon. They stopped here but a short time and then went to Marion county and settled near Salem, taking up a donation claim of six hundred and forty acres, which he brought to a high state of cultivation and on which he built a substantial log house. On this land the death of Mrs. Caton's father took place, March 2, 1864, and her mother passed away on the 15th of September, 1881. Mrs. Caton's demise occurred in Davenport, Washington, at the age of sixty-seven years.

The boyhood of Edwin H. Caton was spent in Marion county, where he received his education and when twelve years of age he removed with his parents to Wallowa county, Washington, where he resided until he was twenty-five years of age and followed the bricklaying trade. In 1887 he left Wallowa, Washington, and came to Oregon, where he purchased his present farm of ninety-one acres. On this land he lived for a number of years and there is no phase of agriculture which he does not understand. While residing in Wallowa, Mr. Caton has studied law quite extensively but because of failing eyesight he was forced to give up his efforts and hopes in this connection. Mr. Caton is now living retired in Athena, enjoying the results of his life of diligence and industry. While on his farm in Umatilla county he followed dairying, in which venture he was also successful.

On the 29th of October, 1879, Mr. Caton was married to Miss Catherine Lieuallen, a daughter of Josiah and Johannah (Campbell) Lieuallen the former a native of Nashville, Tennessee, and the latter of Knoxville, Kentucky. When a young man the father of Mrs. Caton went to Missouri, settling in Mercer county, where his marriage took place and where he engaged in farming until 1863, when he brought his family across the plains and located near what is now Athena on a ninety-one acre tract, on which he built a log house and otherwise improved the land. He operated this land until his death which took place on the 30th of October, 1890. His wife died on the 25th of June, 1887. The political allegiance of Mr. Lieuallen was given to the democratic party and both he and his wife were consistent members of the Baptist church. To the Union of Mr. and Mrs. Caton, four children have been born: Blanche, Mary, Mattie, and Thomas.

Mr. Caton is a democrat in politics, stanchly supporting all measures and interests which he deems of value in the upbuilding of community and commonwealth. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Woodmen of the World. His interest in public and civic affairs is manifest in his connection with the city council and the school board of Athena.
