LEWIS F. CARSTENS. An importan factor in the development of the lumbering resources of Washington county is Lewis F. Carstens, whose well equipped sawmill on Dairy creek, four and a half miles from Greenville, is one of the most active and well known enterprises in the county. Mr. Carstens has been a resident of the state since his ninth year, and came here with his parents from Lake county, Ind., where he was born December 15, 1861. The family settled on a farm near Hillsboro for a couple of years, and then removed to this valley, where they bought a farm and where Lewis F. was reared and educated in the public schools.

When twenty-one years of age Mr. Carstens left his home and farmed independently for a year, and then pre-empted forty acres of land upon which he lived for five years. He then purchased the steam sawmill in which he has since been interested , and in 1890 moved his family to the mill, living there until removing, in 1899, to the farm which had been purchased in 1896. mr. Carstens has a wide knowledge of lumbering, and especially as it is conducted in Oregon, and through his agency vast areas of forest have been devastated and made to serve the latter day purposes of man. His early training on a farm stands him in good stead also in his adopted state, for his present property is well improved, and everything about it suggests good management, neatness, thrift and enterprise.

March 9, 1884, Mr. Carsten was united in marriage with Martha E. Benefiel, who was born near Greenville, a daughter of John W. and Lucy A. Benefiel was first married to Andrew J. Kams, and with him started across the plains from Illinois in the spring of 1853, traveling however, was fraught with grief for the young wife, her husband dying of cholera near Fort Laramie, and one of their two children died on the Snake river. After burying her dead Mrs. Kams proceeded with the rest of the party to Marion county, Ore., where her sister and brother-in-law lived, and made her home with them until her marriage to Mr. Benefiel in 1854. The following year she moved with her husband to a donation claim of three hundred and twenty acres in Yamhill county, where their life for a time was fraught with crudity and inconvenience, and was spent within the narrow confines of a log cabin. In 1865 they removed to Washington county, and for ten years lived in the Purdin settlement, thereafter living for twelve years at Greenville. They came to this farm in 1875, and here Mr. Benefiel died in 1898, at the age of seventy-one years. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Benefiel: Thomas, a miner and prospector in Alaska; Wilson, a resident of Portland, and sexton of a cemetery there; Chaney L., postmaster of Manning; Mrs. Lewis F. Carstens; and Perry , who is a mail carrier of Buckston.

Oregon Trail across Sherman County [tentative title]

As told to L. Bowman by Frank Benefiel.

Notes from the SCHS Collections.

Harvesting. Harvesting out near Klondike. He [Frank Benefiel] was telling when they came west on a wagon train. He was just a kid. They left going up a river and were on the way west several days or weeks. Maybe there was one fellow on the train that was always going to kill the first Indians he seen. Anyway, one day a bunch of Indians came up to the wagon train. They were pulled in a circle ready for a fight when the Indians asked why they had killed that squaw by the river doing a wash. The captain did not know about it so he started asking questions and it seems no one knew about it so he started searching the wagons and finally found this fellow so they just pulled him out from under a bunk and gave him to the Indians and they said they could go on. Frank said you could hear that fellow holler as far as they could hear. Also when they got to China Hollow [in present-day Sherman County] they were out of food and his mother was sick and died that night. He told me she was buried where they were camped and they drove the wagons over the grave. That would be close to where the old Trail came close to the [ - - - ] on the Ward quarter. Better put up a marker for her. Frank is buried in the cemetery at Wasco near the south east corner of the west part. I always visit that grave every time I am there. He told me how the soldiers took care of them once they made The Dalles. I guess they were not in good shape.

Editorial Note: The Benefiels who came to Oregon in 1852 included: Jesse Benefiel who was born in Maryland in 1818 and settled on Oregon Donation Land Claim #3766 in Polk County; Lydia Amanda who married Jesse Benefiel about 1838-1839 in Indiana; James Irvine Benefiel who was born in Indiana in 1835 and died in Sherman County, Oregon in 1920; William Harrison Benefiel who was born in 1847 and died in 1919 in Portland, Oregon; John William Benefiel who was born 1817 to Robert and Mary; and Susannah Hays Benefiel, daughter of Robert and Mary.

WILSON BENEFIEL

Wilson Benefiel, a well known cement contractor of Portland, and also prominently identified with other lines of business, was born May 31, 1859, in Yamhill county, Oregon, a son of John Wesley and Lacy Ann Benefiel. The father was a native of Indiana, and was one of the pioneers of this state, arriving in Oregon in 1852. The mother came from Maryland and was a descendant of the Carrolls, a noted Revolutionary family. Mr. and Mrs. Benefiel moved to Washington county, Oregon, in 1865 and located on a farm.

Wilson Benefiel attended school first at a log school house four miles north of Forest Grove at a place called Greenville. At the age of sixteen years, he laid aside his books, and from that time has been largely self-supporting, although he continued at home for four years, the father's health being such that the responsibility of managing the farm devolved upon the son. At twenty years of age he started out to meet the world, and for a year lived in the Walla Walla district. He then returned to the farm where he continued until 1881, when he removed to Portland, where he was employed for six months by the Lone Fir cemetery. He next resided for a few months at Centralia and there built a boat and went to the Grays Harbor country, where he engaged in the lumber business. In 1886 he returned to Washington county and spent six months upon a preemption claim. From that point he came to Portland, where he has since made his home. He has acted as superintendent of the Lone Fir cemetery since March 12, 1888, a position which he has filled with great acceptance to the board of directors and to those whose friends repose in this beautiful cemetery. About 1901 Mr. Benefiel began as a cement contractor which business he has carried forward in addition to his duties as superintendent of the cemetery. He erected the first concrete building on Union avenue, and also a large three-story concrete building at the corner of Mississippi and Killingsworth avenues. He also built the public swimming pool for the city at Sellwood Park. In his business career he has been highly successful, and has prospered from year to year.

On November 5, 1881, Mr. Benefiel was united in marriage to Miss Addie Sell, a daughter of Stephen Sell, who was a pioneer of Washington county, having arrived in this state from Ohio in 1852. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Benefiel: Francis Wilson, now aged twenty years; and John Wilson, aged fifteen. The older is a graduate of the Portland Academy, and one of the promising young men of the city.

Mr. Benefiel is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Woodmen of the World. He is recognized as a man of fine business ability and a citizen whose example is well worthy of imitation. His career illustrates in a striking degree the advantages which may result to the individual from responsibility in early life, while much of his success is due to habits of industry and economy. His experience indicates that if boys were thrown more upon their own resources there would be fewer failures in after life and the sum of human happiness would be vastly increased.

Wa-Hi Grad Carves Career In Stage Costume Design

At 24, Bary Odom is well launched on a career as theatrical costume designer -- a career, incidentally, which he admits he "sort of drifted into"

The 1960 Wa-Hi graduate, now visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Lawrence, 1316 Modoc, has been in Walla Walla only once previously since he finished school. that was three years ago.

Odom has just finished an October-to-April contract with the New Orleans Repertory Theater and is due in Santa Fe, N.M., by mid-May to head the costume shop for a summer resident opera company in that Southwest capital. This fall he returns for another season with the New Orleans group.
