John Gay 1846-

John was the eldest son of George Gay and his wife Louise St. Cleaire, or so she was called later---see St. Louis Record, January 27, 1879.  As Gay's wife was invariably "Louise", but called Chehalis, Wallis (Worliss), Hare, and St. Claire, it is impossible to know whether this is all the same wife, or several.  Apparently John and Marguerite Gervais, the mother of his children, had not been married in the Church, for in 1879 there is an entry in the St. Louis records of "Renewal of the consent of marriage, According to the rites of the Church.  John Gay and Marguerite Gervais".  Some time later they separate, Marguerite marrying Ulysses Loron.

(I opened the census in adobe and copied the N in Nufade, and compared with other letters on the page.  I think the N is an R  like the Reuben on line 10,  I could even make a case for it to be spelled "Rubide". That would really take some to make it sound like Robideau, but is possible.  Really would like to find their death dates.  The NUFADE spelling is the Family search INDEX spelling -- Sarah)

Annotation from St. Paul for George Kirby Gay 1796-1882

A plaque on a low boulder beside the road fronting his home site on the river near the old landing at Lincoln reads: "One fourth mile southeast lies the body of George Gay.  Born 1796 in Gloucester, England.  Died 1882.  He built the first brick house west of the Rocky Mountains on his farm one fourth mile west of this spot.  He was one of those patriots who, May 2, 1843, founded the Provisional Government at Champoeg." May, 1931.  Gay was several times married, always to natives, "who were worth three white wives". He acquired considerable wealth from his cattle herds, but his boundless hospitality to all comers left him poor at his death.  Numerous descendants remain today.  A replica of his house, built from some of the original bricks which were burned on the farm, stands on the Newell House grounds at Champoeg.
